Taking a pause without a plan is uncomfortable, even after twenty years of doing everything right. In this interview, Sue Stephens, Global VP, Sales at Bluente, shares what stepping back really looked like, and what she found on the other side of it.
The Art of the Pause: How Sue Stephens Turned a Career Break Into a Second Act
What has been the biggest change in your life over the past year?
“After twenty years of working, I hit pause at the start of the year by taking a career break. I’ve been intentional about reflecting on the chapter I closed after nearly eight years at Meta. For the first time in my life, I didn’t set any goals and sat with the ambiguity of not knowing what’s next. It’s been refreshing to spend more time with my family, invest more time in fitness and take on passion projects.”
“I shared with my LinkedIn network that I had closed off the Meta chapter and what sort of opportunities would pique my interest. The founder of Bluente (an AI powered translation document processing solution) reached out for a coffee and we co-created a role that would help accelerate revenue globally. I feel grateful to have taken as much time off that I did and return to work energised and excited for the opportunity ahead.”
What’s one goal or intention you’re carrying into the second half of the year?
“Aside from pursuing my first solo HYROX race in Kuala Lumpur in December, I am looking forward to spending more time reading non-business-related books to truly give my mind the chance to switch off. I just started reading Normal People by Sally Rooney which has me engrossed. This will be especially helpful as I have hit the ground running in my new role!”
What’s one thing the Roots Inspire community has given you that you didn’t expect?
“Some of the Roots Inspire mentees and mentors have become friends. We look each-other up for meaningful unstructured conversations beyond any of the programs. This summer I have caught up with several people from Australia, Amsterdam, Spain to London.”
