Knowing how to do the work is only one part of learning how to build a career. The rest is often less explicit: understanding expectations, forming relationships, developing judgement and finding the confidence to contribute. In this series, members of our community share what they discovered along the way, and what they wish they had known earlier.
Maroua Touhaf on Early Career Lessons
Maroua Touhaf is Marketing Portfolio Lead for Refreshment & Snacking, Ice Cream BNX, at The Magnum Ice Cream Company, where she progressed from Specialist to Lead within a year. Reflecting on her first years in a fast-moving corporate environment, she shares what she learned about asking for help, embracing mistakes and discovering her own way of working.
Looking back at the first few years of your career, what did you find most challenging?
During the first years of my career, I struggled with asking for help and sharing the challenges I experienced. Starting a new job in a fast-moving corporate environment can be overwhelming, and because of that, I developed the belief that I had to figure things out on my own. With time and experience, I recognized the value of asking others for support on the right topics in order to improve efficiency, collaboration, and overall team performance.
What do you know now that you wish you had known then?
I wish I had known that there is beauty in not having all the answers. The early years of your career are about discovering your own way of working and developing your leadership style. It is a unique period where you not only learn about your job, but also about yourself, your strengths, and what motivates you. I also wish I had embraced making mistakes sooner, as these experiences are extremely valuable for your growth.
What other advice would you give early-career professionals?
There is nothing you cannot learn and do. During those first years, it can be quite intimidating when it seems like everyone else already knows what they are doing and is very good at it. Having a growth mindset, being eager to learn, and continuing to ask questions will help you improve. In addition, step outside your comfort zone and do not be afraid to try new things. Before you know it, you will look back and realize how much growth you have made.
